William P. Hobby Unit Overview
The William P. Hobby Unit is a TDCJ Correctional Institutions Division prison in Falls County, about six miles southwest of Marlin off Business Highway 6 on FM 712. TDCJ lists the official address as 742 FM 712, Marlin, TX 76661, and the phone as 254-883-5561. The unit is a female state prison with capacity of 1,384 and custody levels G1 through G5. TDCJ lists ACA accreditation since January 2006.
Hobby Unit should not be described as the Falls County Jail. It does not receive ordinary new county arrestees just because a person was arrested in Falls County. A person reaches Hobby through TDCJ assignment after state sentencing, intake, and classification. The county jail may temporarily hold a sentenced person waiting transfer, but the long-term prison lookup after TDCJ intake is TDCJ.

Lookup William P. Hobby Unit Inmates
Use the TDCJ inmate search for Hobby Unit. TDCJ's inmate information materials say location, general information, offense information, and projected release date may be available online, by email, or by telephone. TDCJ also lists inmate information telephone contact 936-295-6371. IVSS supports name, TDCJ number, SID number, wildcard searching, View Details, and notification options.

Do not use the county jail roster or Sheriff Connect app for a routine Hobby Unit prisoner lookup. Those local channels are for Falls County Jail custody, not state prison custody.

Visit William P. Hobby Unit
Hobby Unit visitation is governed by TDCJ statewide prison rules, not Falls County Jail visitor rules. TDCJ prison visits generally require approval, scheduling, identification, dress-code compliance, and compliance with unit security instructions. The facility page provides the unit contact, while the TDCJ visitation page is the proper source for current statewide prison visitation procedures.
| Visit Topic | Source | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Approval and scheduling | TDCJ visitation rules | Check statewide requirements before travel. |
| Unit confirmation | Hobby Unit phone | Call 254-883-5561 when facility-specific confirmation is needed. |
| County jail visits | Not applicable | Do not use Falls County Jail rules for Hobby Unit. |
Hobby Unit Mail Money
TDCJ mail and money rules are separate from county jail rules. Mail should follow TDCJ inmate mail requirements, including the prisoner's name, TDCJ number, and unit/address format required by TDCJ. Money should use the TDCJ Commissary and Trust Fund or eCommDirect channels, not a county jail commissary vendor.
| Service | Correct Source | Important Distinction |
|---|---|---|
| TDCJ inmate mail rules | Use TDCJ number and prison mail format. | |
| Money | TDCJ trust fund/eCommDirect | Do not use county jail deposit assumptions. |
| Phone and family services | TDCJ family resources | State prison process applies. |
William P. Hobby Unit Programs
TDCJ lists medical, dental, and mental-health services at Hobby Unit, along with telemedicine, Digital Medical Services, CPAP-accommodating housing, and UTMB-managed care. Education and program listings include Literacy, Adult Basic Education, GED, Special Education, CHANGES/Pre-Release, Cognitive Intervention, Parenting Seminar, automotive specialization, Business Computer Information Systems II, Painting and Decorating, Restaurant Management, chaplaincy, a faith-based dormitory, GO KIDS, peer education, reentry planning, and Heart of Texas Foundation College of Ministry.
The unit has 389 approximate acres. Agricultural operations include edible crops, a peach orchard, security horses, and security pack canines. Manufacturing and logistics include a print shop, and facility operations include unit maintenance. These program and operation details come from TDCJ's unit page and should not be copied onto the county jail page.
Hobby Unit Search Fields
TDCJ search fields are more formal than a county jail phone inquiry. A TDCJ number or SID number is the cleanest identifier when known, but name searches are also available. IVSS help says a wildcard asterisk can be used for partial matches, and View Details may lead to more custody information and notification registration. These fields are useful for Hobby Unit because prisoners are identified through state prison records after TDCJ classification.
| Field | Use | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Last and first name | Name search | Use spelling variants if needed. |
| TDCJ number | Current state prison number | Best when a family member or record provides it. |
| SID number | State identification number | Supported in TDCJ/IVSS searches. |
| View Details | More record data | May show location details and notification options. |
Hobby Unit and Falls County
Hobby Unit adds to the physical inmate population in Falls County, but it is not part of the county jail population reported under the 107-bed Falls County Jail capacity. Hobby and Marlin together account for 1,990 state-prison capacity in the county, which can confuse searches for someone "in Marlin." If the person was just arrested by a local agency, check the sheriff first. If the person has a TDCJ number, projected release date, or state-prison location, check TDCJ first.
This distinction also affects records requests. The sheriff may hold a local booking record from before transfer, the clerk may hold the filed criminal case, and TDCJ holds the prison location and sentence-management record after intake. Use the agency that controls the record being requested.
Note: The sheriff cannot approve TDCJ visits, change TDCJ housing, or confirm a state prison projected release date.
